Football Comes Up Short Down at Westminster

Fulton, MO - The Martin Luther College football team had their sights set on picking up their first win of the season against Westminster following a close loss (42-38) to Northwestern a week ago, but were unable to stop the rushing attack of the Blue Jays and fell 28-14.

The Blue Jays outgained the Knights in rushing yards (282-149) in the four quarters, with Dante Billups and Jordan Kern getting the bulk of the carries.

Three of the six drives in the first half ended in an MLC turnover, with a costly fumble occurring at the Westminster 12 yard line, resulting in an 88 yard scoop-and-score for Dylan Farrell, putting the Blue Jays up 13-0 just before halftime. The play served as a critical blow to the Knights' momentum, as they were approaching the goal line for an opportunity to get onto the scoreboard.

The MLC offense had their best drive of the game in the third quarter when they put together 10 plays and 74 yards that led to an 11-yard touchdown run for quarterback Max Nordlie. The touchdown gave MLC some life as they cut it to 21-7 at the 4:59 mark, but Westminster found an answer a couple drives later and extended their second half lead to 28-7, following a seven-yard rushing touchdown for Billups.

The latest touchdown for the Blue Jays ultimately proved to be the difference despite a late touchdown reception for Thomas Koelpin and Westminster walked away with the the 28-14 conference win.

Despite the loss, the MLC defense played their best game of the season and gave a season-best performance in points allowed (21) and yards allowed (319), holding the Blue Jays passing attack to just 37 yards.

Carson Oestreich had a solid game on the ground, rushing for 73 yards on 19 carries. Mason Cox led the receiving group with five receptions for 97 yards.

The Knights had three defenders with double-digit tackles as David Baumann (14), Silas Steinbrenner (13), and Thomas Balge (12) came up with big stops throughout the game.

Next up for the Knights is a home contest against Greenville on Saturday, October 14, at the MLC Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
