Softball Drops Opening Games of Spring Break Trip

Little River, SC - MLC Softball traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC for its 2023 Spring Break trip. In years past, the Knights had gone to Florida for the annual trip. MLC entered Friday's games by dropping a pair of games to Carleton and Concordia-Moorhead on February 18. The Knights took on Pikeville in its 10 a.m. game and would fall 15-0 to the Bears. In the second game of the day, MLC lost 11-2 to Shawnee State.

    Pikeville 15, MLC 0

Both teams were scoreless after the first inning, but the Bears would shortly break the game open with a 9-run second inning. Pikeville's Kelsie Hardester did it all for her team and contributed with a 2-run homerun in the second inning. Hardester was also on the mound for the Bears and threw 3 scoreless innings, while striking out four MLC batters.

Despite going scoreless, the Knights did have 4 hits for the game and battled away the plate in all of their at-bats. Jessica Horn (0-2) pitched 1.1 innings and surrendered 10 runs. Lisa Hoffer would go 1-2 at the plate for MLC.

    Shawnee State 11, MLC 2

MLC would respond from its first game of the day and got on the scoreboard with 2 runs in the second inning, which gave the Knights the lead 2-1 against Shawnee State. However, the Bears settled in and had an 8-run third inning to fully separate themselves from MLC. The meat of the lineup for the Bears got into a groove at the plate and figured out MLC's starting pitcher, Jessica Horn (0-3), who pitched 3 innings in her second start of the day.

Lexi Fischer would have a nice game and was 2-3 at the plate and drove in her first run of the season. Jordyn Heckendorf also was 2-3 and had a triple that was driven into right field. Hannah Ott would also go 2-2 with one run scored.

With the loss, MLC is now (0-4) to the start season and will look for is first win when they face off against Northern Vermont-Johnson and Albion College on Saturday, March 4.
