Northland Tops Knights on Day One of Crossover

Morris, MN - The Martin Luther College softball team went down in 7 innings to Northland College on Friday afternoon by a score of 11-4.

The Lumberjills previously swept the Knights in a doubleheader on April 22, with their bats leading the way over MLC. This time around it was more of the same, as Northland exploded with 19 hits over Jessica Horn.

The game started up with a 1-1 tie through two innings, after the Knights answered the Lumberjills' first inning run with one of their own in the second. Jordyn Heckendorf drove in Lexi Fischer on a sacrifice fly to centerfield, to even up the score.

Northland would get a hold of Horn's pitching arsenal in the bottom of the second inning and plated four more runs on the scoreboard. The Lumberjills hit three consecutive singles, before Izzy Peters hit an RBI triple to give her team the 5-1 advantage.

The Lumberjills scored three more runs to take an 8-1 lead until MLC cut it to 8-2 with an RBI groundout by Katelyn Rassat. The Knights would follow up that inning with a two-run sixth inning, which included another clutch RBI hit from Heckendorf. MLC would push it to 9-4 heading into the bottom half of the inning, but the Lumberjills once again found an answer at the plate to extend their lead to 11-4. As a result, the Knights were unable to make a final comeback attempt in the top of the seventh inning.

MLC recorded 11 hits as a team and had three players with mult-hit games in Heckendorf (3), Fischer (2), and Britney Prahl (2).

Horn went 6 innings on the mound and further established that she can go the distance when needed for MLC.

MLC goes to (7-20, 4-11) with the loss and will continue day two of the crossover event at Morris with a doubleheader tomorrow against UW-Superior at 10 a.m. and Bethany 2 p.m.
