Knights' Offense Erupts in Sweep Against North Central

New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College softball team secured a sweep in their Tuesday doubleheader against the North Central Rams. The Knights took game one 10-2 and then followed that win up with a 25-4 victory in the later game.

MLC 10, North Central 2

MLC made their presence known offensively from the start as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Knights hit three consecutive singles to drive in run and manufactured their fourth run from a sacrifice fly.

The Rams would break the scoring column with two runs in the top of the third inning (4-2), but MLC put up three runs in the bottom of the inning to build back some more cushion in their lead to make it 7-2.

From there, Britney Prahl took matters into her own hands and sealed the win with her three-run shot to left field, giving the the Knights a 10-2 advantage. The homerun gave Prahl her first career big fly and showed the depth in the MLC lineup.

Prahl was perfect at the plate going 2-2 with three runs batted in. Hannah Ott had a three RBI day as well, while Heckendorf and Katie Rassat each came in with two hits.

Jessica Horn threw another complete game, going five innings and surrendered just two runs, fanning six North Central batters.

In game two, the Knights scored a season-high 25 runs to cruise to victory over the Rams. The 35 runs scored in both games also gave MLC a season-high in runs scored for a series and MLC gained contributions from up and down the lineup. The first two innings saw the Knights pile on 19 runs, to take firm hold of the game, including a 13 run second inning. That inning featured two doubles and a grand slam from Hoffer, as the MLC bats figured out Carla Mendoza for a second consecutive game.

Heckendorf continued her performance last week, where she earned UMAC player of the week, by getting a career high with five hits in the second game. The junior also scored three runs, while driving in four runs. Meanwhile, Hoffer and Emmalee Mindock each had four runs batted in. Lexi Fischer and Amelia Thiel also had four-hit games, which led to the season-high in hits (23).

Horn once again tossed a complete game on just four runs allowed and picked up her fifth win of the season.

With the two wins, MLC improves to (9-22, 6-13) and will play a non-conference doubleheader at Gustavus on Thursday, May 4.
