Hoffer, Heckendorf Break MLC Single Season Hit Record in Loss to Gustavus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Peter, MN - The MLC softball team dropped its Thursday doubleheader to non-conference opponent, Gustavus. The Knights fell in game one 2-1, after leading the Gusties heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. MLC would then lose game two of the doubleheader 8-0.

Despite the losses, Lisa Hoffer and Jordyn Heckendorf took first and second respectively in the MLC single season hit list. Hoffer picked up a hit apiece in both games to break her tie with the previous record holder, Emily Waldek, who had 50 hits in 2014. Hoffer now leads the all-time list with 52 hits, while Heckendorf would also pass Waldek for second place all-time with 51 hits. The two teammates will each have two games remaining to further cement themselves in Knights' softball history.

Gustavus 2, MLC 1

Game one saw a pitcher's duel between Jessica Horn and Piper Otto as both pitchers went into the fifth inning with no-hitters. The Gusties would snap Horn's no-hit bid with a single up the middle, but Horn would get out of the inning with no run allowed.

MLC would then get their first hit off of Otto when Emmalee Mindock doubled to left field with two outs. The double gave the Knights' an added boost of momentum and Heckendorf came up with a timely triple to right field to put MLC up 1-0.

Horn would have another three up, three down inning in the bottom of the sixth, but the Knights were unable to tack on an insurance run in the seventh inning. From there, Horn would be three outs away from her first complete game shutout as she entered the bottom of the seventh, but Gustavus had other plans and knocked in the tying and winning run, to defeat MLC 2-1.

Despite the loss, Horn pitched one of the better games of her career and only allowed two runs on four hits.

Gustavus 8, MLC 0

In game two, the Gusties would take advantage of the shorthanded pitching staff of the Knights, as they faced Horn for a second consecutive game. The sophomore would have to overcome the Gustavus lineup for at least another five innings, but would fall into a 3-0 deficit after three innings.

The Knights would have a great opportunity to put at least one run on the board in the fourth inning, when they had the bases loaded, but the Gusties got out of the jam by forcing an inning ending flyout.

The bottom half of the inning was where Gustavus would separate themselves from MLC as they built up an 8-0 lead after scoring five runs to put the Knights away.

MLC will finish out the season with one more doubleheader against Northwestern. The Knights will face the Eagles on Saturday, May 6.
