Minneapolis, MN - The Martin Luther College football team played their third contest of the 2023 season in downtown Minneapolis against a MIAC opponent in Augsburg. The Knights gave a solid effort, but were unable to get much going on either side of the ball and were shutout
62-0 by the Auggies.
MLC only found themselves down 7-0 after the first quarter of action and showed some grit on defense in the second quarter, turning the Auggies over on downs after defensive back,
Jeremiah Stanton, broke up a pass in the end zone on 4th and 16. The play gave MLC some positive momentum, but the offense was stuffed on three plays after starting their drive with a false start penalty.
The Knights had another shot at turning over the Auggies on downs, but this time Augsburg converted on a 4th and 6 and ultimately scored their second touchdown of the game on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Cade Sheehan to Gavin Tegels.
For the remainder of the second quarter, Augsburg would bottle up the run game and caused "third and long" situations for the Knights offense. As a result, the Auggies' offense would capitalize on the success from their defense and put together a 14 play, 70 yard touchdown drive to go up 21-0 entering halftime.
MLC would continue their offensive woes in the second half, as the Auggies' defense forced three turnovers on three consecutive drives, leading to 41 more points in the half.
The MLC defense was led in tackles by
Thomas Balge (14) and
SIlas Steinbrenner (8). Stanton also came up with an interception for the Knights, in addition to two pass breakups.
The Knights (0-3) will now be heading into a bye week and will look to take advantage of some extra rest time before their homecoming game against Northwestern. There, the Knights will be in search of their first win of the year. You can see MLC back at it against the Eagles at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 30.
