New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team dropped its home conference game to Bethany On Tuesday afternoon by the final score of
3-1.
The men hung in the game throughout the 90 minutes of action and were all squared up at 1-1 until the eight minutes remaining when Ben Klausen broke the tie to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. That one goal deficit for MLC soon turned into a 3-1 obstacle, as the Bethany went right back towards the Knights' goal for another quick goal at the 83 minute mark.
Up until that point, goalkeeper
Zachary Pausma showed some resilience as he played through an injury and returned to start the second period. The freshman recorded 12 saves, as the Vikings were active with 15 shots on goal.
The lone MLC goal came from a
Josiah Wordell shot at the 56:49 mark in the second period. Wordell's goal was a timely one, as Bethany had previously scored a couple minutes before.
Overall, besides the Wordell goal, the Knights had difficulty getting quality shots on the Bethany side and had just four shots on goal. The Vikings' defense flew around the field every time the Knights had a window of opportunity and would disrupt any movement.
MLC falls to 2-5 on the season, with an 0-3 start in UMAC play. The Knights hope to turn things around with a non-conference away game up in Minneapolis on Thursday, September 21, when they face a MIAC school in Augsburg. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
