Schoeneck's Late Goal Lifts Knights to Victory

New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team picked up their second win of the season in a well played match against Crown College on Monday evening. The two teams were in a defensive battle and it looked as if it was going to be a draw until Katie Schoeneck scored the lone goal of the match on a breakaway at the 77th minute. The freshman made it 1-0 when she dribbled past the Crown defender and shot it around the goalkeeper.

With Schoeneck's goal, the freshman added onto her team lead of five goals for the year and is now tied for third in the conference for goals scored. Fellow freshman, Rebekah Schroeder, was also a key cog in the Knights victory and recorded 17 saves, which matched her UMAC player of the week performance against Bethany. In addition, Schroeder had a clean sheet for the second time in her young career, with the first occasion happening against Buena Vista a few weeks ago.

"Our team played tough against a very physical opponent. Reba made some great saves and our defense dug in when they needed to," Head Coach Tyson Zarnstorff said. "We were glad to see the offense get on the board with that breakaway goal from Katie."

The Knights had six shots on goal compared to the 17 for the Polars, but made the most of their opportunities. Senior Lydia Krenke gave a great effort on both ends of the field and provided a few quality shots that gave MLC an added boost.

With the win, MLC now goes to 2-5-1 on the year and will go on to face another UMAC school in Northwestern on Wednesday, September 27, at 7 p.m. The Knights hope to get more quality minutes from the freshman combination of Schroeder and Schoeneck to help push them over the top of the (2-5) Northwestern Eagles.
