Superior, WI - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team had a quick turnaround after their win last night against Northland by facing off with UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets entered the contest leading the UMAC in points allowed (54.8) and proved their defensive prowess again by defeating the Knights
83-58.
UW-Superior added a hot shooting day from beyond the arc in addition to their defensive effort and shot 12-of-20, which was good for 60 percent to make it hard for MLC to come back.
The Yellowjackets took an early lead, but
Lauren Paulsen and
Lydia Feidt got into the act to trim the Knights' deficit to 17-12 after the first quarter. UW-Superior pushed the tempo up though and their lead grew to 36-21 with 1:26 remaining in the second quarter courtesy of some 3-pointers off of "drive and kick" plays that found wide open shooters on the wing. In the quarter, the Yellowjackets shot 5-of-7 from distance, while MLC went 0-4 and as a result UW-Superior took a 36-23 lead at the break.
The 3-point shooting continued in the second half and the game would appear out of reach when Katie Dobson converted on an "and one" layup to go up 51-28 with 3:42 left in the third quarter.
Erika Mattson (18 points) would then connect on a triple to give UW-Superior a 57-33 advantage in the fourth quarter and the Yellowjackets would tack on another win in conference as they sit atop the UMAC standings.
Despite the loss for MLC, the Knights still won the turnover margin 13-22 and Feidt led the way with no turnovers and a team-best 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
The Knights (5-12, 2-5) now travel down to Watertown to play at Luther Prep, where they will be regarded as the home team against Maranatha Baptist. The game will start at 5 p.m. on Monday, January 22.
