Mankato, MN - The Martin Luther College softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday to MIAC schools in Gustavus
11-2 and Saint Mary's (MN)
18-2 at the Kwik Trip Invitational at the Minnesota State Dome.
Gustavus 11, MLC 2 (5 innings)
In the first game, the Knights matched the Gusties' two runs with a couple of their own courtesy of an
Olivia Siehr double.Â
MLC would limit Gustavus to just a 4-2 lead and headed into the top of the fifth inning with the same score. However, the Gusties broke the game open with seven runs in the top half of the fifth and came away with the double-digit victory.
Jordyn Heckendorf led the Knights with two base hits in her season debut, while Siehr had two RBI for MLC.
Saint Mary's 18, MLC 2 (5 innings)
The Cardinals opened the contest with a seven-run first inning that was aided by a couple of MLC defensive errors. Saint Mary's posted 10 more runs in the next few innings combined.
Saint Mary's had 16 hits as a team, while the Cardinals' pitching staff held the Knights to four hits through five innings.
MLC scored their only runs of the game off of a two-run single by Heckendorf with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Knights (0-4) return to the field in South Carolina for the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. There, MLC will play a total of eight games against non conference opponents in D-III. The first game will be against Penn State Mont Alto on Tuesday, March 5, at 9 a.m. ET.
