Auggies Down Knights in Saturday Doubleheader

Minneapolis, MN - The Martin Luther College softball fell in its Saturday afternoon doubleheader to Augsburg University 11-3 and 8-2 in the second game.

Augsburg 11, MLC 3 (5 innings)

After the Auggies took a 1-0 lead following the first inning, Jessica Horn settled in for the Knights and tossed two consecutive scoreless frames to keep MLC within striking distance.

However, Augsburg found their swing in the bottom of the fourth and posted five runs to take a 6-0 lead. MLC wouldn't go down that easily though and put together a three-run top of the fifth, when Emmalee Mindock and Lisa Hoffer knocked in a couple of runs off of singles.

The Knights' possible comeback attempt would be short lived though, as the Auggies tacked on five additional runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

MLC did record nine hits in the contest, but left seven runners on base. Jordyn Heckendorf and Horn led the team with two hits apiece, while freshman Rachel McCaughna picked up her first career RBI.

Augsburg 8, MLC 2

The Auggies displayed good discipline at the plate to begin the second game of the day and drew six walks within the first two innings. As a result, Augsburg went up 7-0 through two frames.

MLC scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning after Hoffer hit an RBI single up the middle. Augsburg went up 8-1 after a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, giving them some even more cushion.

The Knights put up one more run in the bottom of the sixth and got two runners on base in the seventh, but were unable to pull off the comeback.

Hoffer got the start for MLC and gave up seven runs in 1.2 innings of work. Horn pitched her best outing of the season in relief after tossing 5.1 innings and gave up just one run (0 unearned) on five hits.

MLC (0-8) will now shift their focus towards their spring break trip down in South Carolina. The Knights play a pair of games on Tuesday, March 5, against Penn State Mont Alto at 9 a.m. and Immaculata University at 11 a.m. ET.
