Curry Outslugs MLC on Final Day of RussMat Invitational

Auburndale, FL - The Martin Luther College baseball team played its final doubleheader of the RussMat Invitational against Curry College (Milton, MA) on Saturday afternoon. MLC took an early lead in the opening matchup and hit the ball well, but the Colonels scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth inning combined to defeat them 18-15. In game two, Curry beat MLC 13-0 after their starting pitcher, Colman Dyer, threw a complete game shutout.

Curry 18, MLC 15

Caleb Heckendorf began the Knights' five-run first inning after he hit an opposite field homer in the top of the second. Spencer Lilienthal and Mason Cox knocked in the other runs in the frame. Curry had a quick response though and tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom half of the inning.

Curry outhit MLC 22-17, but both teams were seeing the ball well. Despite being down 18-10 in the top of the seventh, MLC made it interesting and forced a save situation for Curry. The Knights scored five runs to threaten a late-game comeabck, but Justin Schloss closed it out and got the two outs needed for his team.

Jackson Lindemann and Lilienthal led MLC with three hits apiece, while Cox and Heckendorf paced the Knights with three RBI.

Matt Rieger got the start and struck out the side in the first inning. The senior threw 4.1 innings and despite the loss, gave the Knights some hard working innings.

Curry 13, MLC 0 (6 innings)

Dyer allowed just five MLC hits in his six innings of work in game two for the Colonels. The Knights had a few scoring chances early on to crack the score column, but would leave runners on base.

After going up 5-0 through three frames, Curry put the game away with eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Tommy Marshall hit a three-run home run in the sixth and the Colonels won 13-0.

MLC (3-10) will now head back to Minnesota and won't play until Friday, March 22, when they open up conference play with Bethany. Game one of that three-game series starts at 3 p.m.
