New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College baseball team played its home opener of the 2024 season against UW-Superior. Both schools had a doubleheader planned for the day, but the weather had other ideas, as there were two rain delays of at least 15 minutes. The Yellowjackets' offense appeared ready to go despite the interruptions and left New Ulm with a
19-1 victory over MLC in the conference contest.
UW-Superior drew four walks in the top of the first to extend the four-run inning and showed their patience once again at the plate in the third when they walked five times. As a result, those base on balls and a couple of extra-base hits from Payton Steiner and Isaac Fugere gave the Yellowjackets a 15-1 lead through three frames.
The lone MLC run in the game came in the bottom of the second inning whenÂ
Caleb Heckendorf scored off of a wild pitch after the Knights got two runners on the base pads to lead the inning off.
Brian O'Dwyer led UW-Superior with five RBI, while Steiner finished with three RBI in the seven inning game.Â
In addition to Heckendorf's run scored, the third baseman also paced the Knights with three base hits, while three other MLC players (
Joseph Olson,
Spencer Lilienthal, and
Ethan Melso) recorded one hit apiece.
MLC (3-19, 0-9) will be in search of their first UMAC win, as they get ready to face Minnesota Morris in a three-game series on the road. First pitch will be on Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13.
