Little River, SC - The Martin Luther College softball played Oswego State (NY) and Maine Presque-Isle on day three of their South Carolina trip. While the Knights would fall in both contests
11-0 in game 1 and
7-6 in game 2, the Knights kept playing hard, especially in game 2 as starting pitcher
Jessica Horn broke the MLC record for most innings pitched in a career (430.2 IP). Horn needed eight innings on the mound today to pass the previous mark set by
Kathryn Marquardt (2013-16), who pitched 427.2 innings as a Knight.
Game 1 Oswego State 11, MLC 0
Horn kept the Lakers off the scoring column through two innings, but Oswego State kicked it into gear at the top of the third, totaling five runs in the inning, thanks to a pair of triples and double to center field.
The Lakers extended it to 11-0 following three additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.
Game 2 Maine Presque - Isle 7, MLC 6
MLC showed a lot of grit in the second game and almost came back in the bottom of the seventh inning after trailing 7-3. With the Knights down to their last three outs, MLC rattled off three runs courtesy of a
Rachel McCaughna sacrifice fly that brought
Chloe Berg home.
Hannah Ott had a big double to center field beforehand and Horn drove in
Sarah Yonkovich, who tripled to left field.
The two teams traded leads throughout the first few innings before the Owls added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth frames.
The Knights had their best hitting game of the season and finished with a team-high 13 hits, outhitting Maine - Presque Isle. However, the Owls capitalized on timely hitting and the defensive errors from MLC.
Six different MLC batters recorded an RBI, with Horn finishing with four base hits and two runs, while Yonkovich also scored two runs and two base hits.
MLC (0-10) will wrap up their spring break games on Monday, March 17, with a 9 a.m. game against Hartwick College and an 11 a.m. contest versus Mount Saint Vincent.
