Morris' Persistent Hitting Gives Them Sweep Over Knights

New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College baseball team concluded its home series with Minnesota Morris on Saturday with a doubleheader. After the Cougars took game one 13-3 on Friday, Minnesota Morris continued their hot streak at the plate on Saturday, defeating the Knights 18-5 (Game 2) and 18-7 (Game 3).

Game 2 Minnesota Morris 18, MLC 5 (7 innings)

Minnesota Morris made a loud impression at the plate in the first inning of the day by raking in 11 runs in the top of the first. The Cougars connected on a pair of three-run homers that added to the lead.

MLC scored three of their five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Carlos Walta got into the act with a three-run big fly to straightaway center field. The Knights were able to add a couple of more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the deficit would be too much to overcome as Minnesota Morris beat MLC 18-5.

Jackson Anderson led MLC in hits (2), while Parker Wingart had the most runs (2), and Walta paced the team in RBI (3).

Game 3 Minnesota Morris 18, MLC 7 (7 innings)

In the series' final game, Anderson got the start on the mound for MLC and pitched a solid four innings, holding the Cougars scoreless with three strikeouts. MLC took their first lead of the series at the bottom of the fourth when Jordan Ramirez singled to the right field, driving in Carter Seltz and Samuel Rodriguez.

With MLC going up 2-0, the Cougars would find an answer in the next half-inning and pushed across seven runs. The Cougars did it with patience at the plate, drawing four walks and stealing a few bases when they got on to make it a 7-2 lead in favor of them. Minnesota Morris put up two more in the top of the sixth to make it 9-2, but the Knights had their best offensive frame of the series when they scored five runs as a rebuttal.

MLC cut the deficit to 9-7 and posed a threat to come back, but Minnesota Morris had one more say at the top of the seventh and scored nine runs to put the game out of reach. Ethan Schmitz belted a grand slam to right field, making the difference.

Ramirez led the team with three RBI, while John Westendorf recorded two hits and RBI.

MLC (6-19, 0-12) will go to North Central for a three-game series starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 18.
