New Ulm, MN - The MLC softball team completed their conference and home games of the season on Saturday as they played Crown in a doubleheader. The Polars got the sweep with
10-2 (Game 2) and
12-2 (Game 3) victories over the Knights, but MLC would honor the parents of the players as well as their four seniors (
Jess Horn, Amelia Thiel, Hannah Ott, and Anna Busch).
Game 2 Crown 10, MLC 2
Horn started senior day with a good outing to begin things off as the score was 2-1 through three innings of play. In the bottom of the third,
Chloe Berg ripped a hard hit double to left field, which brought Ott home from first base. MLC tied up the game at 2-2 as
Katie Rassat hit an RBI single to left field with one out. The Knights had an opportunity to take the lead after that with the bases loaded and one out, but the Polars got out of the inning with just one run allowed.
The ensuing inning saw Crown take advantage as they scored eight runs on six hits, resulting in the eight-run rule in the sixth inning.
Berg led MLC with a 3-for-3 day at the plate and an RBI.
Game 3 Crown 12, MLC 2
In the final game, Crown got going at the plate much quicker, as they took a 7-0 lead through three innings, including four runs scored in the second.
MLC put across two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Berg continued her success in the batter's box as she drove a triple to right field, bringing in Ott. Berg made it home shortly after with Rassat's RBI single to center field.
With the score 7-2, the Polars' Emmy Romportl hit an inside-the-park home run, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. From there, Crown scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to finalize the sweep.
Despite the sweep, MLC showed improvement in the series and will now shift their focus towards their final games of the season as they go to Maranatha Baptist for a doubleheader on Monday, April 28, at 12:30 p.m.
