New Ulm, MN -
Brady Turriff threw for 243 yards, two touchdowns and
Arthur Robinson rushed for 104 yards, while the MLC defense shutout the Luther Norse in the home opener
34-0.
It was an all-around solid day from all three units on the field for the Knights as they took on Luther College for the first time since 2006. The Norse quarterback Brett Liljedahl had trouble getting into a rhythm thanks to the Knights' defense, holding him to a .26 completion percentage.
Micah Koschnitzke tied the team led in tackles (6) and pass break ups (2) and had a good day with his leg, connecting on two made field goals.Â
MLC set the tone with two long touchdown drives in the first quarter. Robinson capped off a 10-play 75 yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run up the gut. The Knights then had a methodical drive down the field and took off over nine minutes of the clock before Turriff found
Thomas Koelpin on a fade to make it 14-0.
The Knights added a 12-yard touchdown from
Noah Huebner with less than two minutes and just before the half made it 24-0 with a Koschnitzke field goal.
Luther would have no success moving the ball again in the second half and the Knights were able to chew the clock and focus on playing mistake-free football to seal the non conference win.
Koelpin led all receivers with nine receptions and 88 yards, while
Benjamin Vasold grabbed five passes for 73 yards.
Andrew Esmay recorded six tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble, making an impact all game long on the edge for the Knights. Linebacker
Tyler Case got into the act with five tackles.
MLC had four interceptions as
Trevor Hueske led with two picks, while
Ethan Melso and
Jonah Mittelstadt had one apiece.
MLC moves to 2-0 on the season and up next they go to UW-Eau Claire for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
