Berg ties MLC single season strikeout record as MLC drops series to Northwestern

Roseville, MN - The MLC baseball team took on the Northwestern Eagles this weekend in a conference series on the road. The Knights battled hard throughout, but were swept by the Eagles 4-0 in Game 1 on Friday and then 6-1 (Game 2) and 12-2 in Game 3 on Saturday.

UNW 4, MLC 0 Game 1

MLC received a very nice outing from starting pitcher Owen Proctor, who threw 6 innings on the mound, allowing only four runs on four hits. The freshman struck out five batters, and three of the four runs were on sacrifice flies.

Silas Winkel also pitched well in his two innings in relief, allowing no runs.

UNW 6, MLC 1 Game 2

In the first contest on Saturday, the Knights kept up with the Northwestern bats and recorded seven hits compared to the Eagles' nine base hits.

A 2-run home run in the seventh and an RBI double in the eighth frame proved to be the difference makers for Northwestern, pulling away late.

MLC had opportunities to get more runs on the scoreboard, leaving seven runners on base. The lone run came in the top of the seventh when Evan Kasa singled in a run.

Parker Winghart and Jackson Anderson paced the Knights with two hits apiece. Anderson was also active on the base pads, stealing two bases. Aidan Berg had another solid performance for the Knights, pitching six innings allowing two runs (0 earned) on five hits. The sophomore also fanned six batters, which put him at 66 total, tying Zach Pudlo for the most in MLC history.

UNW 12, MLC 2 Game 3

Northwestern had the bats going in the final contest, scoring six runs through two innings. In the first inning, the Eagles capitalized on a 2-run homer. The rest of the way, Northwestern moved base runners over and got them via sac flies and groundouts, along with multiple RBI singles.

MLC scored in the top of the first off of a Carlos Walta RBI single. John Westendorf drove in Michel Krebs from third base, who recorded a triple on the previous at-bat in the fifth frame.

MLC will have its final home series of the season next weekend when they host North Central, starting on Friday, May 1, at 3 p.m.
