NEW ULM, Minn. -
Aaron Swanson scored in the 93rd minute to give the Martin Luther College men's soccer team a 1-0 overtime win over Minnesota Morris on Wednesday.
Swanson's goal came off a pass from
Ethan Schultz, who sent Swanson into open space up the middle of the field, allowing Swanson the room to beat the UMM keeper.
The goal was Swanson's team-leading ninth of the season, and came after a hard-fought game that featured 25 total fouls, and several key stops by MLC keeper
Caleb King.
King stoned the Cougars on three separate diving attempts, once in the first half off his chest from point blank range, and twice as his out-stretched hand was able to keep the sheet clean for the MLC defense. He finished with seven saves in the game, and now has back-to-back shutouts after last weekend's performance in a 0-0 tie at Northland.
Swanson's goal came on his team-leading fourth shot of the game. MLC finished the game with 13 total shots, eight of which were on goal.
Aaron Markgraf and
Erich Osterman also added a pair of shots.
With the win, MLC improved to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in UMAC competition, while UMM fell to 3-9 this season and 3-3 in league play. The win also snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Cougars, dating back to October 29, 2010.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, October 10, when they travel to North Central for a game scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.
