NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team defeated Northwestern on Saturday by the score of 4-1.
The win was the first for the Knights over UNW since October 6, 2006, and snapped a streak of nine consecutive losses to the Eagles dating back to 2010.
The Knights jumped on top early on a goal in the fifth minute from
Aaron Markgraf, his sixth of the season.
Josh Koelpin assisted on the goal for MLC.
The two teams went into the half with that 1-0 margin, but the Knights would add to in the second period.
Hugo Ugalde-Bemer scored his first career collegiate goal in the 65th minute to push the MLC lead to 2-0, and
Micah Koelpin added his first of the season off an assist from
Jacob Shepherd.
The Eagles cut into the lead thanks to a penalty kick goal in the 72nd minute, but
Aaron Swanson would put the game away in the 84th minute with his eighth goal of the season off a pass from
Nathan Graumann.
Caleb King was strong in goal for MLC, stopping nine of the ten shots he faced. Swanson, Graumann and
Colin Bahmer each finished with three shots for MLC.
The Knights improved to 5-4 on the season and 2-2 in UMAC play with the win. UNW fell to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in league play in defeat.
MLC will return to action on Saturday, October 3, when it travels to Northland for a game scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
