SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team was unable to keep pace in the second half in an 81-63 loss at UW-Superior on Friday.
The Knights led 19-17 after the first quarter, and trailed only 34-33 at the half, but the Yellowjackets took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Knights 22-10 to take a 56-43 lead into the final stanza.
With MLC needing a run to get back into the game, UWS put the game away with a 15-4 run to open the fourth quarter to build the lead over 20 points on the way to the win.
Grace Schultz led the way for MLC, scoring 22 points on 8-15 shooting, and also leading the team with five rebounds. Her 22 points set a new season high, and was one off her career high of 23 points set last season.
MLC finished the game shooting 38.6 percent from the field, while the Yellowjackets shot 49.2 percent overall and 42.9 percent (6-14) from beyond the three-point arc.Â
UWS also won the rebounding battle 40-29, and took advantage of MLC's miscues. The Knights forced 13 Yellowjacket turnovers and converted them into 14 points, while UWS turned 15 MLC turnovers into 26 points on the other end.
Mariah Schoof joined Schultz in double figures with 11 points, while
Moriah Hackbarth added nine points.
MLC fell to 8-8 on the season and 5-4 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved its record to 14-2 overall and 9-0 in league play with the win.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, January 23), when they travel to St. Scholastica. That game is scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m.
