MANKATO, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team defeated Bethany Lutheran 2-1 in a double overtime thriller thanks to a
Joseph Graumann game-winning goal in the 103rd minute on Thursday.
Graumann had chances throughout the night, taking 12 total shots and three shots on goal before finally netting the game-winner off a scrum in front of the net following an
Aaron Swanson shot from the left side. The goal was Graumann's fifth of the season.
The Vikings came into the game without a win, but played their rivals tough with the help of a strong start. BLC hit the post on a shot in the first minute, and then opened the scoring in the seventh minute on a goal from Kenny Johnson, ending MLC goalkeeper
Caleb King's shutout streak at four games and nearly 400 total minutes.Â
The Knights were able to tie the game before half when
Nathan Graumann converted on a penalty kick in the 39th minute after a BLC foul in the box.
The teams went back and forth in the second half and into overtime, but neither was able to get the winning goal until the Knights finally sent the large MLC fan contingent on hand home happy on
Joseph Graumann's tally.
MLC dominated possession and the pace of play, outshooting the Vikings 47-13 overall, but struggled to get past the final Viking wave of defenders, leading to a number of shots off target.
Swanson and
Josh Koelpin finished with six and five shots, respectively, while King finished with eight saves out of BLC's nine shots on goal.
The Knights improved to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in UMAC play with the win. BLC fell to 0-14 on the season and 0-5 in league games in defeat.
MLC will return to action on Saturday, October 15, when it travels to UW-Superior for a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
