SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team saw its season come to a close with a 66-51 loss at UW-Superior on Wednesday.
The Knights started strong against the Yellowjackets, who entered the tournament as the top seed after an undefeated conference season.Â
MLC led 14-7 after the first quarter thanks to a strong defensive effort, but turnovers turned the game in favor of UWS in the second period. The Knights committed 13 miscues in the first half, allowing the Yellowjackets to take a 30-27 lead into halftime despite MLC shooting 44.2 percent from the field compared to 30.6 percent for UWS.
The third quarter was more of the same for the Knights, as the Yellowjackets built their lead to 47-33 with the help of eight more MLC turnovers in the quarter.
The Knights battled in the fourth quarter, but was unable to make a run against the UWS defense the rest of the way.
MLC finished with 24 turnovers, compared to 15 miscues for the Yellowjackets. UWS also made the Knights pay on the offensive glass, out-rebounding MLC 39-30 for the game, and out-scoring the Knights 18-7 in second-chance points.Â
Grace Schultz finished as the leading scorer for MLC with 19 points, making seven of her nine attempts from the field.
Erin Schmeling added 11 points to go with three assists, while
Mariah Schoof battled early foul trouble to finish with eight points.
MLC finished the season with a record of 13-14 on the season. The Yellowjackets improved to 23-3 on the year, and advanced to the Championship Game on Saturday, February 27, against Northwestern.Â
