ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team defeated Crown 3-2 Saturday for its third consecutive win.
The Knights played well, but also received good fortune in the form of a pair of own goals by Crown in the match, as both MLC's first and third goals came off Crown defenders.
The first own goal came in the fourth minute off a deflection, and
Josh Koelpin pushed the MLC lead to 2-0 at the 11:00 mark of the first half with a goal off an assist from
Aaron Markgraf.
The Storm came back, however, scoring in the 33rd and 53rd minutes to tie the score at 2-2, but the Knights took advantage of a defensive miscue in the 70th minute when a Crown defender misplayed a header back to his goalkeeper, which ended up being the winning MLC goal.
The Knights were credited with 19 shots for the match, including 11 shots on goal.
Aaron Swanson led the team with five total shots and two shots on goal. Koelpin and
Ethan Schultz also recorded two shots on goal.
Caleb King earned the win in goal for MLC, stopping four of six Crown shots.
MLC improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 0-6-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in league play following the loss.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, September 21, when they travel to Bethany Lutheran for a conference game scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.
