NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team held off a late comeback attempt to defeat Buena Vista 3-2 on Wednesday.
MLC opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a penalty kick goal by
Aaron Markgraf following a hand ball in the BVU box.
The Beavers tied the game 1-1 in the 29th minute, but the Knights took the momentum back thanks to an
Aaron Swanson header over the head of the BVU keeper in the 43rd minute.
Already leading 2-1 early in the second half, the Knights scored the insurance goal they would later need thanks to a second Markgraf penalty kick goal in the 59th minute following a Beaver foul inside the box.
BVU fought fight back, scoring in the 78th minute to cut the deficit in half, and then pressing all the way until the final seconds, when one final flurry was stopped by the MLC defense to give the Knights the win.
Swanson finished with seven shots, including his third goal of the season and two more than glanced off the cross bar. Markgraf's two goals give him a team-high four on the season.
Caleb King stopped 11 of the Beavers' 13 shots on goal to help preserve the win.
The Knights improved to 5-4 on the season with the win, while BVU fell to 4-6-1 on the season in defeat.
MLC will return to action on Saturday, October 1, when it hosts Northland College in a game scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.
