NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team returned to their winning ways with a 2-1 win over Crown College on Wednesday.
The Knights did all their damage on offense in the final three minutes of the first half on goals by
Luke Meihack and
Josh Koelpin, and made those goals stand with a strong defensive second half.
Meihack broke a scoreless tie in the 43rd minute with his fifth goal of the season off a pass from
Nathan Graumann to give the Knights momentum late in the half.
Koelpin then sent the Knights flying high into the break with a laser shot to the far post off his brother
Joel Koelpin's pass with just two seconds to play in the half to give MLC the 2-0 lead.
With the Knights unable to add an insurance goal early in the second half, the Storm made them play to the end thanks to a goal in the 71st minute, but the MLC defense led by
Elijah Kroll,
Ryan Plath and
Justin Digman held the Storm at bay the rest of the game to secure the win.
Gabriel Plocher started in goal for MLC and stopped six of the seven shots he faced. The Knights outshot the Storm 18-11, with
Hugo Ugalde-Bemer leading the team with fourth shots and two shots on goal.
MLC improved to 5-6 on the season and 4-2 in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 1-10-2 overall and 0-6-2 in league play with the loss.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, October 14, against UW-Superior. The two teams will play the remaining 28:02 of the suspended game from September 23 starting at 2:15 p.m., and will follow shortly afterwards with the orginally scheduled game at 3 p.m.
