NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team overcame a huge comeback by Bethany Lutheran with a comeback for the ages of their own in a 3-2 win over the Vikings by the scores of 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 10-25 and 16-14.
After winning the first two sets, the Vikings roared back to take the next two games, including a dominating fourth-set win that put the Knights on their heels.
BLC continued its run to start the fifth set and held a 14-7 lead, but the Knights got the side out necessary with a
Moriah Hackbarth kill to cut the deficit to 14-8. From there, senior libero
Taylor Weber served eight straight MLC points to finish off the comeback win. During those eight points, the Knights recorded three blocks (all involving senior middle hitter
Rylee Weisensel), while
Kira Grev added three kills during that stretch. Weisensel finished the match with a kill to close the run of nine straight for MLC.
Jade St. Germaine rolled early in the match for the Knights, recording eight kills in the first set on the way to a team-high 20 for the match. Grev added 13 kills, while
Grace Schultz added eight kills.Â
Weisensel finished with six blocks. Weber led all players in the match with a career-best 28 digs.Â
MLC improved to 15-15 overall and 10-5 in UMAC play with the win. BLC fell to 10-19 on the season and 6-9 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, October 28, when they host Northwestern in the regular season finale. That match will start at 3 p.m.
