ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College football team ran for a season-best 414 yards on the way to a 44-28 win at Crown College.
The Knights built a 34-0 lead with 13:10 to play in the fourth quarter before the Storm put together four touchdown drives in the final quarter in an attempt to close the gap down the stretch, but never pulled closer than 15 points down the stretch.
Four MLC runners scored at least once in the game, starting with sophomore quarterback
Ian Paulsen's 37-yard run to open the scoring midway through the second quarter.
Elliott Butler and
Nate Stein each added one-yard touchdown runs later in the quarter, and
Josh Wong scored from eight yards out early in the fourth stanza.
Paulsen was able to add a six-yard touchdown pass to
Joshua Arndt in the third quarter, and Butler closed the scoring for MLC with a 36-yard run late in the fourth quarter on fourth and inches after the Storm had cut the deficit to 37-22.
Paulsen led the Knights with 132 rushing yards on 21 carries, and also completed seven of 11 pass attempts for 95 yards. Stein also went over the century mark with 110 yards on 11 carries, while Butler and Wong added 87 and 70 yards, respectively. The team's 414 rushing yards was the most by an MLC team in a single game since the 2012 season.
The defense held the Storm off the board for the first three quarters as the Knights build its big lead, and held the Storm to 100 yards rushing in the game. Most of Crown's 251 yards passing came in the final stanza, with MLC cornerbacks
Jared Witkowiak and
Joseph Herrewig combining for seven pass break-ups.
Tristan Pankow led MLC with five tackles, while
Josh VonDeylen recorded 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sack.Â
MLC improved to 5-4 on the season and 4-4 in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, November 4, when they host Eureka in the season finale. That game is scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m.
