NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team battled back from adversity on multiple occasions to top Saint Scholastica 3-2 in the quarterfinal round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament on Monday by the scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-27, 25-18, 16-14.
The Knights were hitting on all cylinders to open the match and built a 23-14 lead, but the Saints rattled off 11 straight points to close the set and take 1-0 lead.
MLC responded with a strong finish to set two to tie the match, but CSS once again came up big down the stretch of the third game to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Needing to win the fourth set to extend the match, the Knights did just that with the help of five kills apiece from
Jade St. Germaine and
Rylee Weisensel.. MLC once again built a big early lead in the fifth set, but the Saints wouldn't go away as they saved four match points at 14-10 to tie the set 14-14 before St. Germaine and
Kira Grev closed the match with back-to-back kills to secure the MLC win.
MLC finished the match with 80 team kills, the most by an MLC team since the 2006 season. St. Germaine led the team with a career-best 26 kills, giving her the most kills by an MLC player since the 2013 season.Â
Grev also had a big night with 16 kills, while Rylee Weisensel and
Moriah Hackbarth each finished with 14 kills. Weisensel committed only one error on 19 attempts and finished with an attack efficiency of .684.
Grev also led the team with 28 digs, followed by
Taylor Weber with 25 digs. Setters
Emily Byhardt and
Hailey Stade each set new career-highs with 37 and 31 assists, respectively.
MLC improved to 16-16 on the season with the win, while CSS fell to 13-19 to close its season following the loss.
With the win, the Knights advance to Wednesday's semi-final against conference-champion Northwestern in a match scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
