ASHLAND, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team clinched a UMAC Postseason Tournament berth with an 81-67 win at Northland on Saturday.
The Knights entered the day in fifth place in the conference standings, and needed both a win over the Lumberjills and a St. Scholastica loss against UW-Superior to clinch one of the five spots in the conference tournament. They held up their end of that bargain, and were rewarded with a 94-72 St. Scholastica loss at UWS.
MLC finished with four players in double figures, led by
Jade St. Germaine's team-high 24 points to go with 12 rebounds. It marked her eight double-double of the season, and is the fifth time she has scored at least 20 points in a game. St. Germaine finished Saturday's game 6-16 from the field, but made 11 of 15 free throw attempts and her lone attempt from beyond the three-point arc.
She was joined in double figures by
Grace Schultz (16 points),
Faith Schroeder (15) and
Mariah Schoof (13). Schoof also added five assists, and moved in second place in program history with 155 career three-point field goals. She is only two shy of Hannah Hackbarth's MLC record of 157 career three-pointers.
The two teams were tied midway through the third quarter, but the Knights began to surge ahead late in that period. MLC closed the third quarter on a 10-3 run, and then responded to a Lumberjills' run to open the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to put the game away.
The Knights shot 41.5 percent from the field and went 6-14 from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded the Lumberjills 55-36, leading to a 22-10 advantage in second chance points.
MLC improved to 9-14 on the season and 7-7 in UMAC play with the win. Northland fell to 8-16 overall and 4-12 in UMAC play in defeat.
The Knights will return home for the final weekend of the regular season. They will host Northwestern (MN) in a game on Friday, February 17, at 5:30 p.m.
