Softball Falls Twice on Day Two at Rochester Dome

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games on day two at the Rochester Regional Stadium and Bubble against St. Olaf (13-1) and St. Benedict (10-3).

St. Olaf 13, MLC 1

The Knights opened the day with a 13-1 defeat to St. Olaf at the Rochester Dome.

The Knights took advantage of some Ole miscues in the first inning, as Kayla Rosenbaum reached base on an error by the first baseman and scored later in the inning when Rachel Haugly was hit by a pitch.

St. Olaf would take control from there, however, taking an 8-1 lead into the seventh inning and capping the night with a five-run final inning to earn the win.

Kelli Doell fell to 0-2 on the mound for MLC after allowing eight runs (six earned) on ten hits in five innings. Amanda Schoch came in relief and allowed five runs on five hits.

Jessica Friebe hit two singles in the game to lead the MLC offense. Rosenbaum recorded the other hit for the Knights.

St. Benedict 10, MLC 3

The Knights set season highs for hits and runs, but fell short in the finale by the score of 7-3 against St. Benedict.

The Knights opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to hits from Friebe, Doell and Megan Lemke, but settled for one run on a Rosenbaum sacrifice fly while leaving runners at the corners with a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short lived, as the Blazers scored twice in the bottom half of the first, and then tacked on at least one run in four of the next five frames. MLC scored twice in the top half of the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-3 following run-scoring hits by Rosenbaum and Lemke, but CSB scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the Knights away.

MLC finished with a season-high seven hits, led by a pair of hits from Lemke. Friebe scored two of the three MLC runs and finished with one hit

Rebecca Pruss made her collegiate debut on the mound for the Knights and went the distance, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 18 CSB hits in six innings as she fell to 0-1 in defeat.

MLC fell to 0-4 following the two losses. The Knights will return to action on Thursday, March 17, when they play a pair of games against Maranatha Baptist in the Plymouth Dome.
