NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team clinched a spot in the UMAC Postseason Tournament with a 2-0 win over Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday.
The Knights entered the day in fourth place with 17 total points in the conference standings, and moved into a tie for third place with Minnesota Morris following the win. This marks the third consecutive season in which the Knights have made the conference tournament.
Neither team was able to generate anything on the offensive end in the first half, but Jon Pederson put the Knights ahead 1-0 less than three minutes into the second half when he scored on a cross from
Dan Wessel right in front of the BLC goal. The goal was Pederson's third of the season.
Joe Graumann put the game away for MLC in the 67th minute with his 10th goal of the season. Graumann broke free following a long ball pass from
Aaron Swanson and was able to shake the BLC keeper on a breakaway for the goal.
The MLC defense held the Vikings in check throughout the game as BLC finished with only two shots on goal.
Gabriel Plocher was up to the challenge on both of those shots as he secured his third straight shutout.
MLC improved to 7-8-2 overall and 6-3-2 in UMAC play with the win. BLC fell to 7-8-3 on the season and 3-5-3 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will finish the regular season on Saturday, October 27, when they host Northland College in a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
