NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team raced out to a big early lead in its regular season finale and never looked back in a 6-1 win over Northland College.
The Knights started all seven of their seniors in the final home game of their careers and they did not disappoint.
Hugo Ugalde-Bemer started the scoring in the fifth minute with his fourth goal of the season to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Stephen Oelhafen, starting his first game of the season, assisted on Ugalde-Bemer's opening goal for his first career point. Unsatisfied with just a helper, Oelfafen scored three straight goals in just over five minutes as the home crowd roared. Oelhafen's first goal came in the eighth minute off an assist by Ugalde-Bemer, and the second came just 43 seconds later off a cross from
Josh Koelpin.
Joel Koelpin recorded the helper on the third goal in the 13th minute as the Knights took a 4-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks were able to score late in the first half to break the Knights' shutout streak dating back to October 13, but the Knights were able to tack on second-half goals from
Joe Graumann and
Mark Burger to put the game away.
Josh Koelpin recorded his second assist of the game on Graumann's goal, while
Nathan Lemke had the helper on Burger's first career tally.
The Knights dominated play for much of the day, outshooting the Lumberjacks 28-11 overall and 11-4 in shots on goal.
Gabriel Plocher recorded three saves in goal for the Knights in his final home start.
MLC clinched third place in the final UMACÂ standings with the win, finishing the conference season with a 7-3-2 record to go with a 8-8-2 overall mark. Northland fell to 1-15-1 overall and 0-12 in UMAC play with the loss.
The Knights will return to action on semi-final round of the UMACÂ Postseason Tournament. MLC will play at number two seed St. Scholastica on Wednesday, October 31.
