NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team lost to Bethany Lutheran 2-1 on a penalty kick in the final five minutes on Wednesday.
The Vikings took the early lead thanks to a Bailey Bakken goal in the 15th minute, but the Knights responded with a goal from
Emily Witkowski off a
Morgan Hill assist in the 20th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was the third of the season for Witkowski and broke a three-game goal-scoring drought for the Knights.Â
The two teams traded chances for more than 60 minutes of action, but the Vikings were finally able to find the game-winner thanks to an MLC foul in the box, leading to BLC's Bridget Brown scoring on a penalty kick.
Lydia Bitter led MLC with four shots, two of which finished on net. One of those shots in the first half came from well outside the box and went off the cross bar. Witkowski added three shots.
In goal,
Mollie Fischer stopped five of the Vikings' seven shots on goal.
MLC moved to 3-14 on the season and 3-8 in league play in defeat. BLC improved to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in UMAC play with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, October 27, when they host Northland College in the season finale. That game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
