Knights Defeat St. Scholastica 4-3

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team stopped a 21-game losing streak to St. Scholastica with a 4-3 win over the Saints on Saturday.

The Knights jumped on the board first with a Jon Pedersen goal from Nathan Lemke in the 30th minute, but CSS came back to score a pair of goals late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Undeterred, the Knights pressed to begin the second half and were rewarded with a pair of goals by Dan Wessel in the 68th and 77th minutes, respectively. Joe Graumann recorded an assist on both goals, while Joel Koelpin added an assist on the equalizer.

The Saints tied the game 3-3 just 2:22 after Wessel gave MLC the lead, but the Knights roared right back as Joshua Thiesfeldt sent home the game-winner off a cross from Hugo Ugalde-Bemer in the 82nd minute to give the Knights the win.

Wessel's two goals give him three on the season, while Pederson's goal was his second this season. Thiesfeldt's game-winner was his first collegiate goal.

Both teams finished the day with 20 shots, with CSS holding an 11-6 edge in shots on goal.

The Knights relied heavily on its experience defensively, as seniors Josh Koelpin, Aaron Swanson and Justin Digman kept the ball out of harm's way for much of the game, while senior keeper Gabriel Plocher stopped eight shots in goal.

The MLC win stopped a streak of 21 straight defeats to St. Scholastica dating back to the Knights' last win in the series on October 13, 2006.

MLC improved to 4-6-2 overall and 3-1-2 in UMAC play with the win. CSS fell to 5-5-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, October 10, when they travel to Crown College for a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
