ST. PAUL - The Martin Luther College baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader at Northwestern-St. Paul on Sunday by the scores of 16-4 and 20-9.
UNW 16, MLC 4 (8 innings)
The Knights were unable to slow down the Northwestern offense in a 16-4 game-one defeat.
UNW jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning, but the Knights cut the deficit to 5-3 after a two-run fifth inning.
The Eagles' offense took over from there, scoring 11 runs in the next three innings to end the game after eight.
Andrew Mantz (0-2) started the game on the mound for MLC and allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings.
Karl Kuschel and
Wade Shult each recorded two hits to lead the MLC offense.
UNW 20, MLC 9
The Eagles continued their offensive onslaught in game two with a 20-9 win to complete the sweep.
UNW once again jumped to a big lead early with eight runs in the first four innings, but MLC battled back with seven runs in the fourth and and fifth innings to stay within striking distance. The Eagles would take control late, however, with nine runs in the final three frames to secure the win.
Tyler Roecker (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits in three innings.
Grant Hagen led MLC with three hits, while
Adam Westra and
Adam Kock each finished with a pair of hits. Westra and
Luke Willems each finished with two runs batted in.
MLC dropped to 2-14 on the season and 0-8 in UMAC play following the two losses. UNW improved to 14-15 overall and 9-3 in league play with the two wins.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Monday, April 30) when they travel to Minnesota Morris for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
