WINONA, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a 9-0 loss to Saint Mary's at Winona Tennis Center on Friday.

The Cardinals opened the match with three wins in doubles competition, topping the Knights' number one team of Anna Hemmelman and Morgan Shevey 8-7 (7-3 tiebreaker), as well as 8-1 wins in the other two matches.

In singles, SMU won all six matches in straight sets. Hemmelman dropped her match 6-2, 6-2, snapping an 11-match win streak dating back to early in the 2018 season.

The Knights fell to 0-1 in defeat, while SMU improved to 1-0.

MLC will return to action on Saturday, February 9, when it travels to Macalester for a match scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
