Volleyball Falls in Four on Homecoming

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team was unable to sustain the momentum from a great first set in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-12, 25-12) loss to St. Scholastica in front of a Homecoming crowd on Saturday.

The two teams went back and forth in the first set, but the Knights came back from a late deficit to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Kati Aguilar had a big set for MLC with five kills on 10 attempts.

The Saints flipped the script from that point, however, making a big run midway through the second set and never looking back on the way to winning the final three sets 25-15, 25-12 and 25-12.

CSS ht .324 on the attack in the second set, and was even better in the third (.407) and fourth (.353) games. MLC struggled on the attack after a strong first thanks to some brilliant hustle plays from the Saints' back row in key moments that kept plays alive.

Aguilar finished with an MLC-best 10 kills for the match, while Jewel St. Germaine recorded a double-double with 14 assists and 15 digs. Kate Aswege recorded a team-best 21 digs. Alyssa Heckendorf led all players with five blocks.

MLC fell to 3-17 on the season and 1-3 in UMAC play in defeat. CSS improved to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, October 16, when they travel to North Central for a conference match scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The previously scheduled home match against St. Olaf on Monday, October 14, was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.
