Men Unable to Finish Upset in 2OT Defeat to UWS

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team fell just short in its upset bid against defending UMAC champion UW-Superior in a 2-1 loss in double overtime.

The two teams battled the weather and field conditions following a rain-filled week that was capped by nearly two more inches of rain Saturday morning.

MLC was undeterred, however, as Joe Graumann quickly put the Knights ahead 1-0 just 61 seconds into the game off a counter attack assist from Lucas Martin. The goal was Graumann's team-leading sixth of the season.

The Knights would hold that one-goal advantage until early in the second half, when Miguel Ocampo scored for the Yellowjackets to tie the game.

The two teams remained tied through the end of regulation and one overtime period until the 102nd minute, when a foul in the box led to a penalty kick goal by Eric Watson to win the game for the Yellowjackets.

Joshua Higgins as stellar in goal for the Knights throughout the game, stopping 18 of 20 UWS shots on goal. The defensive back line of Nate Lemke, James Nitz, Seth Hackbarth and Caleb Hengst also did a good job all day against the skilled Yellowjackets and kept them outside the box enough to give Higgins a chance.

MLC fell to 3-7-2 on the season and 1-1-0 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-0 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, October 9, when they travel to Bethany Lutheran College for a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
