NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team won its quarterfinal game of the UMAC Postseason Tournament 2-1 in overtime against rival Bethany Lutheran on Monday.
After a scoreless first half, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead on a long distance goal by Maddie Perry over the head of MLC keeper
Mollie Fischer in the 64th minute of play.
BLC threatened to put the game away with a penalty kick opportunity in the 73rd minute, but Fischer stoned the Vikings on the kick and the rebound to keep the deficit 1-0 heading into the final minutes.
Those saves would turn out to be big, as the Knights finally scored the equalizer on an own goal in the 84th minute to force overtime.Â
In the extra period, the Knights finally took advantage of their 11th corner kick of the game as
Maya Aden's kick found
Avery Broyles in front of the goal, and Broyles ended the game with her first goal of the season.
The Knights outshot the Vikings 16-11 overall, with
Erika Rosenbaum leading the way with five shots.
Mollie Fischer stopped six of the Vikings' seven shots on goal.
MLC improved to 8-9-1 on the season and advanced to the semifinal round of the conference tournament, where it will play at St. Scholastica in a game scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
BLC dropped to 8-10 in defeat.Â
