Yellowjackets Top Knights in UMAC Opener

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team fell 77-48 at UW-Superior (UWS) in Saturday's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener.

Both teams had a first quarter to forget on the offensive end, as UWS finished the first 10 minutes with a 12-5 lead after the teams combined to shoot 5-19 with 15 turnovers. The Yellowjackets picked up the pace in the second quarter, however, and built its lead to 28-16 heading into the half.

UWS would continue to assert itself on both ends of the court from there as it shot 57.7 percent from the field and made 17 of 24 attempts from the free throw line to put the Knights away over the final two quarters.

MLC finished the game shooting 27.7 percent from the field compared to 47.8 percent for UWS. The Yellowjackets also out-scored MLC 29-18 from the free throw line, and took 40 total free throws for the game (20 of them in the fourth quarter).

Emily Witkowski (13 points) and Jordyn Heckendorf (11 points) led the MLC scoring effort, with Heckendorf also leading the team with three assists. Emma Nelson finished with a team-high five rebounds.

MLC fell to 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Monday, February 1, when they are scheduled to host Crown College at 7 p.m. in the team's home opener.
