NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team was unable to slow down the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) in an 88-49 defeat on Tuesday.
In the loss, senior wing
Emily Witkowski moved into fourth place in MLC women's basketball program history by reaching 936 career points. She entered the game with 924 career points, and passed Jade St. Germaine (931) and Mariah Schoof (933) after scoring 12 against the Cougars.
The Knights started strong from the outside, going 4-4 from beyond the three-point arc in the first quarter but still trailed 21-18 at the end of the first ten minutes due to 10 turnovers in the period.Â
The Cougars took control from there, out-scoring the Knights 20-6 in the second quarter and continuing to push the lead throughout the second half on the way to the win.
After shooting 50.0 percent from the field in the first quarter, the Knights finished the game shooting 29.0 percent while turning the ball over 23 times. The Cougars shot 49.2 percent overall, and turned those MLC miscues into 28 points on the other end.Â
Erika Gosch finished as the Knights' leading scorer with 13 points. Witkowski joined her in double figures with 12 points, while
Emma Nelson added nine points off the bench.
MLC fell to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in UMAC play in defeat. UMM improved to 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference action with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Thursday, February 18, when they travel to UMM for a non-conference rematch. That game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
