NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's tennis team overcame an early deficit to defeat Minnesota Morris 5-4 in Thursday's home opener.
The Knights' number-one doubles team of
Jonah Schulz and
Benjamin Foss won their match 8-4, but the Cougars took the other two doubles matches 8-7 (10-5) and 8-6 to take a 2-1 overall lead heading into singles play.
MLC was able to turn things around in singles, however. Schulz (6-1, 6-3), Foss (6-3, 6-0) and
Josiah Wordell (6-2, 6-2) each won in straight sets, while
Josiah Koelpin came from behind to win his number-five singles match in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 1-0) thanks to a 10-6 third-set tiebreaker to push the Knights to the 5-4 team win.
MLC improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in UMAC play with the win. UMM fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Thursday, April 8, when they travel to UW-Superior for a match scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
