Knights Roll to 3-1 Win at UNW

ST. PAUL - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team recorded its first win of the season by the score of 3-1 at University of Northwestern-St. Paul (UNW) on Saturday.

After being held to just one goal in its first seven halves of the spring season, the Knights carried over the momentum from their three-goal second-half against Bethany Lutheran on Thursday.

A pair of Michigan Lutheran Seminary Cardinals (MLS) scored in the first half, with Mark Burger putting the Knights on the board in the 16th minute, and David Martin adding his second goal of the season in the 44th minute to give MLC a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Lucas Martin assisted on both goals.

The Eagles tried to make things interesting in the second half and cut the MLC lead in half in the 50th minute on a goal by Koby Wesselink, but Lucas Martin capped a big day with his first goal of the season in the 84th minute to put the game away.

Lucas Martin finished the game with four points (one goal, two assists), and also led the team in both shots (five) and shots on goal (three).

Joshua Higgins was steady in goal for the Knights, stopping eight of the nine shots he saw.

MLC improved to 1-3-1 on the season and in UMAC play with the win. UNW fell to 5-10-0 overall and 1-4-0 in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, April 23, when they host Northland College in a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
