Knights Defeat Storm in Extra Time 1-0

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team won in style by the score of 1-0 in overtime at Crown College on Tuesday.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout regulation, but neither could find a goal before they went into overtime.

In the extra period, the Knights continued to press in the Storm end of the field, but still could not find a goal. Finally, as the clock was winding down on the first overtime, Lydia Bitter gained possession following a Crown goal kick, maneuvered down the field, and Hannah Schroeder sent home Morgan Spoehr's cross inside the box to end the game with around one minute remaining in the first overtime.

Schroeder, who has been consistently strong in her first collegiate season but had not been able to find the back of the net through the first six games, made her first collegiate goal count in the extra period. She also led all players in the game with eight total shots, including three shots on goal.

The defense held the Storm out of trouble for much of the night, and keeper Mollie Fischer was there to clean up the rest. Fischer stopped all nine shots she faced to record her first shutout of the season and the eighth shutout of her career.

MLC improved to 2-5 on the season and in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 2-5 overall and in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return home to host North Central University on Saturday, May 1, in the regular season finale. That game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
