Men's Tennis Advances with 8-1 Win

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's tennis team advanced to the semi-final round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament with an 8-1 win over fifth-seed University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) on Thursday.

The Knights entered the tournament as the fourth seed, but split two meetings with the Cougars this season with each team recording a 5-4 win.

MLC jumped in front early, sweeping the three doubles matches by the scores of 8-6, 8-7 (7-1) and 8-5.

In singles, Benjamin Foss (6-1, 6-4), Marcus Sims (6-2, 6-4) and Elijah Schulz (7-6, 6-1) each won in straight sets, while Seth Koelpin (6-7, 6-2, 1-0) and Josiah Koelpin (7-5, 3-6, 1-0) each won in three sets.

While the final result wasn't as close as the previous two meetings, that was because the Knights consistently won the big points. Out of the five tie-breakers played in the match between singles and doubles, MLC won four of them.

MLC improved to 4-5 on the season with the win. UMM fell to 4-7 in defeat.

With the win, the Knights advanced to the second round, where they will play at St. Scholastica on Monday, May 3.
