NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team returned home for the first time in nearly three weeks and defeated Northland College 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) on Friday.

The Knights were in control from the start, building a big lead in the opening game on the way to a 1-0 lead in the match, and then scoring eight of the final 10 points in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead overall.

In the third set, the Knights put the LumberJills away with contributions across the board, as eight different players recorded kills.

MLC hit .158 on the attack for the match, led by a strong day by middle hitter Hannah Willems. Willems recorded 10 kills and hit .562, while also contributing three blocks, five digs and one service ace.

Lauren Paulsen and Kelsey Birschbach also had big days with nine kills apiece. Birschbach also finished in double figures with 11 digs.

Kate Aswege led the team with 17 digs, while Anna Treder finished with a team-best 22 assists. 

MLC improved to 3-8 on the season and 2-0 in UMAC play with the win. Northland fell to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 25) when they host UW-Superior in a match scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
