NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team came back from a tough first game to get a split against UW-Superior (UWS) on Sunday. The Knights lost the opener 17-4, but won game two 1-0.
UWS 17, MLC 4
The Yellowjackets jumped in front early and never looked back in a 17-4 win in game one.
UWS scored six times in the first inning as the first seven batters reached base off MLC starting pitcher
Sam Rodriguez (0-4), who took the loss after only one inning of work.
The Yellowjackets continued to roll offensively against the Knights' bullpen, scoring five times in the second inning, twice in the third, once in the fourth, and then three final times in the sixth frame.
Mason Cox led MLC with two hits and added one run batted in (RBI).
Jackson Lindemann and
Jonas Lindemann also drove in runs in the Knights' four-run seventh inning.
MLC 1, UWS 0
The Knights flipped the script in game two as
Zach Klement threw the first shutout by an MLC pitcher since 2019 (Adam Kock) to push the Knights to a 1-0 win.
Klement (1-2) started the game by stranding two Yellowjackets' hitters in scoring position in the first inning, and stranded 15 UWS runners on base for the game as he weaved his way out of trouble throughout the day.Â
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning, when
Andrew Deisinger singled home
Jonas Lindemann, who started the rally with a one-out double to the warning track down the right field line.Â
That would be all the offense Klement would need, as he scattered 10 hits while striking out seven. The MLC defense was also up to the task, making all the plays and finishing without an error for the second time this season.Â
Deisinger finished the game with three hits and one RBI. Cox recorded two hits and one stolen base.Â
MLC moved to 3-20 on the season and 3-10 in UMAC play following the split. UWS moved to 9-15 overall and 5-4 in league play.
The Knights' home game against the Yellowjackets scheduled for tomorrow (Monday, April 25) has been postponed without an official rescheduled date. MLC will return to action on Tuesday, April 26, when it hosts Bethany Lutheran College in a single game scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
