Softball Splits at Crown

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team split its doubleheader at Crown College on Wednesday, losing game one 11-10 before winning game two 8-7 in eight innings. 

Crown 11, MLC 10

Crown overcame a five-run deficit to defeat MLC on a walk-off hit in its final at bat 11-10 in game one.

The Knights held two separate five-run leads in the game, building a 7-2 advantage in the third inning, and then taking a 10-5 edge in the fourth.

The Storm roared back to tie the game 10-10 in the fourth inning, and then scored the winning run on a one-out single in the seventh.

Jordyn Heckendorf, Elena Hoffman, Emma Berg and Lexi Fischer each finished with two hits for the Knights in the game, while Lisa Hoffer, Hoffman and Fischer each drove in two runs apiece.

Madison Uhlenbrauck (4-11) went the distance in the circle for MLC in defeat.

MLC 8, Crown 7

MLC earned the split in extra innings in game two with an 8-7 win.

The Knights once again started fast, building a 6-1 lead in the third inning and holding a 7-4 edge after five.

Crown scored twice in the sixth inning and forced extra innings with a run in the seventh, but Hoffer singled home Heckendorf in the eighth inning to give the Knights the lead once again, and Uhlenbrauck earned the save with three outs in the bottom half to secure the win.

Heckendorf, Hoffman and Fischer each finished with two hits for the second straight game, while Hoffman added two runs batted in. Jessica Horn (4-10) started the game for the Knights and pitched the first seven innings to earn the win.

MLC moved to 10-22 on the season and 5-13 in UMAC play after the split. Crown is now 7-17 overall and 5-11 in league play.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, April 29, when they play in the second UMAC Crossover. Due to rain in the forecast, the schedule has changed where MLC will now play Bethany Lutheran at 12:00 p.m., followed by a game against UW-Superior at 4:00 p.m.
