NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of its Saturday doubleheader to University of Northwestern-St. Paul (UNW) by the scores of 11-4 and 12-1.
UNW 11, MLC 4
MLC started strong, but UNW used an eight-run third inning to take control and win game one 11-4.
The Eagles scored twice in the first inning, but the Knights responded with an
Elena Hoffman grand slam in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead after one.
The Knights still led 4-3 after two innings, but the Eagles scored eight times in the third frame thanks to six hits and two errors, and then cruised the rest of the way for the win.
Jordyn Heckendorf led MLC's hitters with three hits. Hoffman's home run was her fourth of the season and the 21st of her career.
Madison Uhlenbrauck (0-7) went the distance in the circle for MLC in defeat.
UNW 12, MLC 1
The Eagles built a big lead early on the way to winning game two 12-1.
UNW led 2-0 after two innings, and then broke the game open for good in the third inning once again with 10 runs.Â
MLC answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning on a
Kylie Wolf RBI-single, but that was all the scoring the Knights could muster.
Jessica Horn (1-5) took the loss after pitching the first three innings.
Lisa Hoffer led the MLC line-up with two hits.
The Knights dropped to 1-13 on the season and 0-4 in UMAC play following the two defeats. UNW improved to 10-7 overall and 4-0 in league play with the sweep.
MLC will return to action on Monday, April 11, when it hosts Maranatha Baptist for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
